VIRTUAL ADOPTION

Become a Virtual Guardian for a very special cat

These cats in our care have chronic or life-limiting illnesses such as FIV, FeLV or cancer, that make them difficult or impossible to adopt into permanent homes. Other cats have been through such a trauma that they need to stay with us longer to learn to trust people again.  Through our Virtual Adoption program, you can become a special sponsor for one of these cats and help cover their ongoing care. Your support ensures they can live with dignity, safety, and compassion.

Choose one of the animals that is listed below. Click on their picture and find out about their journey and their character. Each month, you contribute €30, which covers part of the animal’s monthly needs for food and medical care. For this reason, more than one virtual parent may support the same animal. You can also offer a virtual adoption as a gift to someone you love who would like to help a stray animal. Once the process is completed, you will receive a certificate from us with the name of the cat you selected. You will also receive a monthly update and news about them via the email address you provide.

Procedure

After making your decision and choosing one of our animals please email us

at nawsvirtualcat@gmail.com and we can organize the details.

Thankfully , these cats will live safely at our shelter for the rest of their lives, where we will provide them with medical care, special nutrition, comfort, and love.

Your virtual adoption helps cover essential monthly care, including:

Special food

LENNART

Meet Lennart

Some stories remind us that even the toughest exterior can hide the gentlest heart. Lennart was found lying on the main road in Naxos after being hit by a car. His injuries were severe—a broken pelvis that required surgery and many weeks of careful recovery. Unable to move freely, he spent a long time confined to a recovery crate while his bones slowly healed.

During those difficult weeks, Lennart was angry, frightened, and in pain. He lashed out at everyone who tried to help him, hissing, scratching, and attacking the volunteers who cared for him every day. We all believed he was simply an aggressive cat. But we couldn’t have been more wrong.

The day finally came when Lennart was strong enough to leave his crate and enjoy the freedom of the shelter grounds. Almost overnight, he revealed the cat he had been all along. The frightened, defensive cat disappeared, replaced by one of the sweetest, most affectionate boys you could ever meet. Lennart now follows our volunteers around the shelter, asking for cuddles, enjoying every bit of attention he can get. He spends his days relaxing in the sunshine with the other free-roaming cats, content, peaceful, and finally happy.

Lennart is FIV positive, but he is healthy, happy, and deserves the chance to experience what every cat dreams of: a loving home of his own. If the right family comes forward, NAWS will ensure he is fully vaccinated and prepared for travel so he can begin his new life wherever that may be.

Until that special day arrives, you can make a real difference by becoming Lennart’s Virtual Adopter. Your monthly support helps provide his food, veterinary care, and everything he needs while he waits for the forever home he so richly deserves.

Could you be the person who changes Lennart’s life forever?

Medical condition

Lennart was born in 2015 and lives with FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus – a slow acting species –specific virus that weakens a cat’s immune system, making them susceptible to infections.) He also suffered a broken pelvis when he was hit by the car and was sent to Syros for specialized surgery. Because of his chronic illness Lennart cannot be adopted into a typical home. By virtually adopting Lennart, you become his special guardian and help ensure he can live safely and comfortably for the rest of his life. While Lennart may never leave the shelter, your kindness gives him something incredibly important — security, care, and love.

Become Lennart’s virtual guardian today.

As a virtual adopter, you will receive:

  • A personalized virtual adoption certificate
    • Monthly photos and updates about Lennart

DENIA - I'm Adopted!

Meet Denia

Denia was born March 2025 and came into our care in July of the same year.  She was found in the main town of Naxos (Chora) with a severe eye infection and consequently lost her sight in that eye. She is very sweet but extremely shy and hides when we come into the room – but she is playful and happy with other cats.

Medical condition

Denia lives with FeLV –  the Feline Leukemia Virus, a serious, contagious retrovirus that compromises her immune system. It often causes cancer, severe anemia, or secondary infections. While not curable, many cats can live with a good quality of life for months to years with specialized, indoor-only, and stress-free care.

Because of this chronic illness Denia cannot be adopted into a typical home and will remain at our shelter, where we ensure she receives lifelong care, safety, and comfort.

By virtually adopting Denia, you become her special guardian and help ensure she can live safely and comfortably for the rest of her life. While Denia may never leave the shelter, your kindness gives her something incredibly important — security, care, and love.

Lovus was probably born in 2023 as we think he is about 3 years old. He was found at the Iria road feeding station in a very bad condition suffering from an upper respiratory condition. He now enjoys cuddles although is still quite shy with people and other cats. He enjoys roaming his outdoor enclosure and being part of the cat gang.

Medical condition

Lovus lives with FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus – a slow acting species –specific virus that weakens a cat’s immune system, making them susceptible to infections.) Because of this chronic illness Lovus cannot be adopted into a typical home and will remain at our shelter, where we ensure he receives lifelong care, safety, and comfort.

SOPHIA - I'm Adopted!

Meet Sophia

Some cats lose their trust in people after suffering cruelty. Somehow, Sophia never did.

She was found in the village of Agios Arsenios with a rope tightly tied around her neck. A mentally challenged resident had tethered her to a cupboard outside the family home, leaving her unable to escape. We can only imagine how desperately Sophia tried to free herself. It is believed that, in her struggle to chew through the rope, she lost all of her teeth.

She is one of the sweetest cats at the shelter—gentle, affectionate, and always ready for a cuddle. She loves human company, enjoys being stroked, and is a happy, active girl who gets along beautifully with the other cats.

Because she has no teeth, Sophia is best suited to an indoor home where she can live safely and comfortably. She has adapted incredibly well and doesn’t let her disability stop her from enjoying life. Sophia has already survived more than any cat should ever have to. Now she deserves a future filled with kindness, comfort, and love.

Your monthly support helps provide her food, veterinary care, and the security of knowing she will always be safe, cared for, and loved.

Medical condition

Sophia was born in 2024 and lives with FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus – a slow acting species –specific virus that weakens a cat’s immune system, making them susceptible to infections.) Because of this chronic illness Lucia cannot be adopted into a typical home and will remain at our shelter, where we ensure she receives lifelong care, safety, and comfort.

He needed some time after all the pain he went through to trust people but some of us can pet him now and he socializes well with other cats.

Despite everything Laki has been through, he has a gentle and special spirit.

LUCIA

Meet Lucia

Lucia was born in 2021. In August 2024, she was taken to the vet by someone who could no longer care for her, so NAWS took over her care.  When Lucia was found, she had a broken pelvis and was dragging her back legs. After spending many weeks resting in a small crate, her fracture healed. She still walks a little wobbly and needs time to rebuild her muscles after such a long period of restricted movement. At first, Lucia was very scared, but she has slowly become more trusting. Now she enjoys gentle cuddles from the people she knows. She also gets along well with the other FIV+ cats she lives with, as they share the same outdoor enclosure.

Medical condition

Lucia lives with FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus – a slow acting species –specific virus that weakens a cat’s immune system, making them susceptible to infections.) Because of this chronic illness Lucia cannot be adopted into a typical home and will remain at our shelter, where we ensure she receives lifelong care, safety, and comfort.

Physical Disability - Leg Amputation

Tape

Meet Tape

Tape’s story is a very sad one — but it is also a story of hope and a second chance. Tape  was born in 2024. She was found with a broken leg and her body trapped inside a  cardboard roll of packing tape. She may have gotten her head stuck in it herself, or it may have been placed on her — we will never know. By the time she was rescued, she was in very poor condition. The roll had been around her for a long time, causing a deep, painful, and bloody wound, as shown in the photos. Sadly, her injured leg could not be saved and had to be amputated, which means she will not be able to return to the streets.

Tape is still very shy and withdrawn. In her first weeks with us, she was extremely hungry after having been starved. Even now, when we enter the room, she stays very still, lying flat on her blanket, trying to make herself invisible. But despite everything she has been through, Tape now has a future. With time, care, and kindness, she can learn to trust again.

Her story becomes even more hopeful when someone chooses to virtually adopt her. Through virtual adoption, you are not only helping to provide her with food, medical care, and a safe place to heal — you are also giving her something she has never truly had before: security, compassion, and a chance at a better life.

 Medical condition

Tape had to have her injured leg amputated so she lives with a disability.

By virtually adopting Tape, you become her special guardian and help ensure she can live safely and comfortably for the rest of her life. While Tape may never leave the shelter, your kindness gives her something incredibly important — security, care, and love.

As a virtual adopter, you will receive:

Chronic Rhinitis

EMMANOUELLA

Meet Emmanouella

Some stories are simply more heartbreaking than others.

When Emmanouella was rescued in May 2025 in Mikri Vigla in Naxos, she was in a terrible state. She was struggling with a severe respiratory infection that had clearly been affecting her for a long time. We knew she deserved every chance, so she underwent extensive veterinary examinations, including an MRI at the veterinary clinic on Syros.  We hoped there would be a simple solution. A polyp. A tumour. Something that could be treated.

Instead, the results showed that Emmanouella has chronic rhinitis caused by the severe respiratory infection she had endured. There is no cure—only management and ongoing care.

She is one of the most affectionate cats you could ever hope to meet. She adores people and will happily spend her day asking for cuddles and soaking up every bit of love she can get. She is playful, gentle, and enjoys the company of other cats as well.

Medical condition

Emmanouella lives with chronic rhinitis which means she has long – term inflammation of the nasal passages and sinuses which causes persistent sneezing, noisy breathing and poor appetite due to a diminished sense of smell.

Because of this chronic illness Emmanouella cannot be adopted into a typical home and will probably remain at our shelter, where we ensure she receives lifelong care, safety, and comfort.

By virtually adopting Emmanouella, you become her special guardian and help ensure she can live safely and comfortably for the rest of her life. While Emmanouella may never leave the shelter, your kindness gives her something incredibly important — security, care, and love.
